HAIRCUT
FOR SENIOR

We believe in honoring and supporting our seniors as integral members of the community.

Grooming for
Dignity &
Well-being

In Singapore, many low-income seniors live on limited financial resources, such as government assistance schemes or modest savings, often prioritising essentials like food, medication, and rent over personal care. For this group, a simple haircut—typically costing between $10 to $20—can be an unaffordable luxury.

Yet personal grooming is more than just hygiene—it’s deeply connected to one’s mental and emotional well-being. When seniors are unable to maintain their appearance, it can affect their self-esteem, sense of dignity, and willingness to engage socially. Over time, this can contribute to feelings of isolation, neglect, or even depression—especially for seniors who are already coping with isolation and aging-related challenges.

Recognising this gap, one of our most heartfelt initiatives is the Monthly Free Haircut Service, dedicated to low-income seniors. It provides not just professional grooming but also a renewed sense of respect, connection, and personal worth.

Collaborative Effort
with Professional Stylists

To ensure a high standard of service, we collaborate with trained and experienced hairstylists who generously volunteer their time and talent. These professionals not only provide quality haircuts but also embody compassion, patience, and care in every interaction with our senior beneficiaries.

WHERE WE SERVE

Our Community Touchpoints

Since 2019, our monthly haircut events at Whampoa Community Club have become a cherished routine for many. Each month, we serve approximately 70 seniors, many of whom look forward to the warm interactions and grooming care that go beyond the haircut itself.

To enrich the experience, we also involve volunteer befrienders—dedicated individuals who engage with the seniors while they wait for their turn. These friendly conversations and shared moments help reduce feelings of isolation and foster a sense of community among our elderly beneficiaries.

Our consistent efforts and community impact at Whampoa were recognised with the Excellence Award from the People’s Association Community Spirit Awards in 2023, a testament to the heart and commitment behind this initiative.

Bishan Community Club

Our second location at Bishan Community Club reflects a strong and thoughtful collaboration with the CC committee. Together, we co-created a haircut program that integrates seamlessly with existing food distribution services, held every last Wednesday of the month.

By aligning both services at the same time and location, we’ve created a holistic support experience for seniors—offering convenience, dignity, and care all in one visit. While waiting in line for their food collection, seniors are invited to receive a free haircut, transforming the waiting period into a moment of personal care and social connection.

Our partnership with Bishan CC covers all facets of program execution:

  • Community outreach and publicity

  • Beneficiary registration and flow management

  • Logistics and volunteer coordination

This collaborative, well-orchestrated effort ensures a smooth, efficient, and meaningful experience for every senior we serve.

Upskilling Volunteers Sustaining Impact

To reach more seniors and expand our impact, we actively recruit hairstylists from salons as well as community volunteers—many of whom are retirees or working professionals—who have a genuine heart to serve. These individuals come together to offer not just haircutting skills, but also empathy, respect, and meaningful connection to every senior they serve.

To ensure the quality and sustainability of our haircut services, we also partnered with X’pect Studio to introduce a mentorship scheme. This initiative pairs professional stylists with volunteer hairstylists, enabling skill transfer, capacity building, and hands-on experience under expert guidance. Through this approach, we not only uphold service standards but also empower volunteers to contribute meaningfully while growing their own capabilities.

More Than Haircuts
It’s Community in Action

This initiative is about more than grooming—it’s about connection, confidence, and community care. Each session creates a space for dignity, human touch, and shared joy. As we continue to grow, we remain committed to reaching more seniors, empowering more volunteers, and building a stronger, more caring society.
